Paul is mocking the Corinthians’ old heathen way of life when they were driven by some unknown power (demons) to follow mute gods who are not gods at all, but lifeless idols who are unable to speak and who have to be carried around because they have no legs. It seems likely that Paul is alluding to Psalm 115:1–8 and Psalm 135:15–18. Paul now begins to describe the spiritual gifts that the Trinity has bestowed upon the Church.
